Why are stand up bags for food packaging so popular?
Bagged Products Driving Commercial Transformation
Do you think it’s an exaggeration to say that bagged products have driven commercial transformation? Imagine how a grocery or retail store would survive without product packaging. Products without proper packaging are unlikely to perform well, and customer satisfaction would significantly decrease.
With the development of new packaging materials, manufacturers and distributors have adopted various packaging options: plastic boxes, kraft paper boxes, display cases, bottles, composite cans, and flexible packaging, among others. Among these, one relatively novel form of packaging—the stand-up pouch—stands out. Stand-up pouches enhance product value, improve visual appeal, are lightweight and convenient to carry, easy to use, and offer excellent freshness and resealability. These advantages make them a popular choice for manufacturers and distributors.
Benefits of Stand up Pouches
The stand-up pouch originated from the French company Thimonier. In 1963, M. Louis Doyen, then CEO of Thimonier, successfully patented the Doypack (stand-up pouch), which later became the formal name for stand-up pouches. In the 1990s, stand-up pouches gained widespread recognition in the US market and subsequently became popular worldwide. Stand-up pouches offer manufacturers and consumers a superior alternative to traditional packaging.
From a manufacturing standpoint, modern packaging machinery can fully automate the production process. Stand-up pouches offer ample space, excellent sealing properties, and reusability. They are naturally advantageous for liquids and products that need to stay fresh. Stand-up pouches with aluminum foil can prevent contaminants from entering while preserving freshness, flavor, and nutritional quality. Additionally, stand-up pouches are incredibly convenient to use. Their bottom gusset design saves shelf space and makes storage easy. Tear notches make the pouches easy to open.
Stand-up pouches with spouts can be resealed or reopened, combining the convenience of a spout with the practicality of a stand-up pouch. These pouches are generally used for household products, such as beverages, body wash, shampoo, ketchup, cooking oil, and gel-like products.
3. Stand up Zipper Pouches:
Stand-up zipper pouches can be resealed and reopened. Due to the limited sealing strength of zippers, these pouches are unsuitable for liquids and volatile substances. Based on the edge sealing method, they are divided into four-side seal and three-side seal types. Four-side seal pouches have an additional edge seal that must be torn open to use the zipper. This design resolves the issue of low edge strength, making them suitable for transportation. Three-side seal pouches use the zipper edge directly as the seal, generally used for lightweight products. Zipper pouches are commonly used for packaging candies, cookies, and lightweight solids, though four-side seal pouches can also package heavier items like rice and cat litter.
4. Imitation Spout Stand up Pouches:
Imitation spout stand-up pouches combine the convenience of spout pouches with the cost-effectiveness of standard stand-up pouches. These pouches achieve the functionality of a spout through their shape but cannot be resealed. They are typically used for single-use liquids and gels like beverages and jelly.
These innovative stand-up pouches come in various shapes based on traditional pouch designs, such as waist-shaped designs, bottom variations, and handle designs. They represent the main direction of added-value development for stand-up pouches.
As society progresses and aesthetic standards rise, along with increasing competition across industries, the design and printing of stand-up pouches have become more colorful and diverse. Shaped stand-up pouches are trending towards replacing traditional stand-up pouches.
